About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in autotuning of electromechanical systems, based at the Energy & Systems Lab within the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. The research group is affiliated with Flanders Make, a strategic research centre for the Flemish manufacturing industry, offering a collaborative and international environment. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team and contribute to cutting-edge research in adaptive tuning and control of electromechanical and mechatronic systems, with a particular focus on developing tools and algorithms for adaptive control and autotuning.

The role involves continuing the development of generic set-ups for powertrain control with electric motors, supervising doctoral and master's students, coordinating projects, disseminating scientific results, and supporting educational activities. The candidate will also play a key role in acquiring funding for both fundamental and applied research, and contribute to industrial services requiring digital control algorithm implementation.

Applicants must hold a thesis-based doctorate in electromechanics or a closely related field, with the diploma requirement met by the recruitment date. For degrees obtained outside the EU, a certificate of equivalence from NARIC is mandatory. Candidates should demonstrate a strong research track record, evidenced by publications and conference contributions, and have experience with numerical simulation tools and algorithms relevant to the field. Knowledge and experience in control systems are essential, as are skills in supervising students and academic education. The position requires excellent communication skills, flexibility, and the ability to work effectively with researchers from diverse backgrounds.

The appointment is for a definite duration of one year, starting no earlier than 18 May 2026, with the possibility of extension. Remuneration is determined by salary scale PD1 to PD4 for doctoral degree holders. Ghent University offers a comprehensive benefits package, including training and education opportunities, 36 days of annual holiday leave, fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.

To apply, candidates must submit their application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline of 30 April 2026. Required documents include a CV and academic transcript (merged as one PDF), cover letter, diploma transcript, and any additional materials such as reference letters or study results. Applications sent by email will not be considered. For further information about the vacancy, applicants may contact Prof. Frederik De Belie at [email protected]. Questions regarding the application process can be directed to [email protected].

This position offers an excellent opportunity to advance research in electromechanical systems and adaptive control, contribute to academic and industrial innovation, and develop professional skills within a leading European university.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
