About this position

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Battery Materials & Electrochemical Energy Storage within the Materials Sciences Division and the Helms group.

This postdoctoral opening focuses on the interface of materials chemistry, battery materials, and electrochemical energy storage. The successful candidate will work on battery materials processing, electrode and cell fabrication, full electrochemical cell assembly and testing, and the study of how electrode, electrolyte, and interfacial structures evolve during cycling and aging.

Research activities include synthesizing and processing active materials and composite electrodes, optimizing formulation and manufacturing protocols, conducting galvanostatic cycling, impedance spectroscopy, rate testing, and related electrochemical measurements, and applying structural/interfacial characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The role also includes experiments at synchrotron and other user facilities, data analysis, manuscript preparation, mentoring students, and collaboration across chemistry, materials science, and engineering.

Required background includes a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field; hands-on battery materials experience; glovebox/inert-atmosphere cell assembly; electrochemical characterization experience; and experience with at least one structural or interfacial technique. Strong communication, publication record, independent research ability, and careful data management are expected.

The appointment is full-time for 2 years with possible renewal. Salary is listed at $84,336-$94,020, depending on postdoctoral experience and union step rates. Priority consideration is given to applications submitted by 2026-08-19.

Applicants should submit a CV, cover letter, and publication list through the Berkeley Lab careers portal.
