About this position
The University of Jyväskylä, Department of Chemistry is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Bioelectrochemical CO₂ Conversion and Electrocatalysis for a 24-month fixed-term project focused on renewable methane production. The position is carried out in close collaboration with an industrial partner near Jyväskylä, giving the successful candidate an opportunity to work across both academic and industrial environments.
The project centers on the development, integration, and industrial validation of durable electrocatalysts and methanogenic bioelectrochemical systems for efficient CO₂-to-methane conversion. The role spans materials optimization, electrochemical and materials characterization, reactor and catalyst development, methane production studies, durability testing, and preparation for exploitation and pilot-scale roadmapping. The work is designed to bridge experimental development with practical implementation and technology transfer.
The postdoc will be employed by the University of Jyväskylä throughout the project, with the work divided roughly equally between the university and the company partner: about 12 months at the university and 12 months at the company, arranged in flexible blocks. Academic periods will emphasize experimental development and controlled validation, while company periods will focus on industrial requirements, process integration, application scenarios, performance evaluation, and roadmap preparation.
Applicants must hold a completed doctoral degree before the starting date in chemistry, electrochemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, biotechnology, microbiology, biochemical engineering, or a closely related field. The post requires strong experience in electrocatalysis, bioelectrochemical and anaerobic systems, catalyst and reactor development, materials characterization, methane production, and catalyst durability studies. Experience with multidisciplinary academic-industry projects, scale-up, techno-economic assessment, and life-cycle assessment will be an advantage. Excellent English, independent research ability, collaboration skills, and willingness to work in both academic and industrial settings are essential.
The position offers access to the University of Jyväskylä’s chemistry infrastructure and a collaborative research environment with expertise in electrochemistry, microbiology, circular economy, and renewable energy technologies. The advertised salary is approximately 3600–4800 €/month gross depending on qualifications and experience, with a holiday bonus included. Relocation support may be available for candidates moving from abroad.
