About this position

Empa, the Swiss research institution in the ETH Domain, is offering a postdoctoral position in the Laboratory for High Performance Ceramics in Dübendorf, Switzerland. The project sits at the intersection of solid-state ionics, ceramic proton conductors, semiconductor photoelectrochemistry, and fundamental materials physics.

The successful researcher will carry out experimental investigations and theory building on charge and ion transport in functional materials. The work includes synthesis and processing of ceramic proton conductors, solid electrolytes, and semiconductor photoelectrodes; structural characterization by X-ray and neutron diffraction; ionic transport studies using impedance spectroscopy and complementary electrochemical methods; and electronic, vibrational, and vibronic characterization using synchrotron- and neutron-based spectroscopic techniques. A further part of the role is developing and validating quantitative physical models for charge transport, proton dynamics, and electrochemical conversion.

Empa’s Laboratory for High Performance Ceramics combines advanced synthesis, spectroscopy, electroanalysis, synchrotron radiation, and neutron scattering to address fundamental questions in electrochemical energy conversion and storage. The position offers direct work with the Principal Investigator on internationally funded research projects and access to a modern laboratory environment, including UV-Vis, Raman, impedance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, optical spectroscopy, and complementary analytical tools. The research is embedded in long-standing collaborations with leading international research groups and provides opportunities to participate in experiments at large-scale facilities.

Applicants should have a PhD in physics, chemistry, or materials science, together with a strong background in solid-state electrochemistry and/or semiconductor photoelectrochemistry. A strong publication record, excellent scientific writing, independent working ability, and strong experimental problem-solving skills are important. Experience with electrochemistry, solid-state chemistry, neutron or synchrotron methods, or spectroscopy is advantageous.
