About this position

Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne (URCA) is offering an 18-month full-time postdoctoral position in chemistry, based at the Institut de Chimie Moléculaire de Reims (ICMR, UMR CNRS 7312) in Reims, France.

The project, EXTRAPEC, is part of the ANR PEPR B-BEST programme and focuses on the chemo-enzymatic extraction of polygalacturonan polysaccharides from sugar beet pulp using reactive extrusion. The scientific goal is to develop bio-based, biodegradable alternatives to polyacrylic acids used in detergents as anti-scaling agents.

The successful postdoctoral researcher will contribute across the full value chain: optimizing pectin extraction from sugar beet pulp by reactive extrusion; performing chemo-enzymatic deconstruction into soluble acidic polysaccharides using enzyme cocktails provided by partner laboratories; and characterizing the resulting products using NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC/SEC), and other spectrometric methods. The role also includes evaluation of anti-scaling properties in collaboration with an industrial partner.

The position is highly collaborative and sits within a network of four public research laboratories and two industrial partners, including Tereos and Coatex/Arkema. It is embedded in a green chemistry and agro-industrial co-product valorization context, with access to strong processing and analytical facilities at ICMR, including advanced rheology and thermo-mechanical characterization resources and a 600 MHz NMR spectrometer with cryoprobe.

Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in macromolecular chemistry, polymer chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline. A strong background in reactive extrusion and/or polymer chemical modification, plus expertise in polymer structural and physicochemical characterization, is expected. Independence, scientific rigor, and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaboration are important selection criteria.

The application deadline is 15 November 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Paris). The expected start date is 4 January 2027. Interested candidates should send a detailed CV and cover letter to Christophe Bliard and Pauline Blyweert by email.
