About this position

Forschungszentrum Jülich is advertising a Postdoctoral Researcher position in Computational Electron Microscopy and Machine Learning within the Institute for Advanced Simulation – Materials Data Science and Informatics (IAS-9), in close connection with the Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons (ER-C) and the Jülich Supercomputing Centre.

The role sits at the interface of electron microscopy, deep learning, and materials science. The group develops physics-grounded machine learning methods for microscopy data rather than generic image statistics, and the successful candidate will help identify open microscopy questions, develop new computational methods, validate them on real experimental data, and connect model outputs to physically meaningful interpretations.

Research topics include real-space imaging, 4D-STEM diffraction, in-situ time series, simulation studies (e.g. multislice and Bloch-wave methods), dataset construction, model training and evaluation, and the development of open datasets, benchmarks, and software. The postdoc will also publish in microscopy/materials science journals and machine learning venues, and contribute to proposal writing and third-party funded projects.

Eligibility highlights: completed Master's degree and PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related field; strong electron microscopy background; experience with microscopy simulations or quantitative data analysis pipelines; practical experience training deep learning models; strong Python and PyTorch skills; excellent interdisciplinary communication; and English at B2 level or higher.

Funding and conditions: 2-year fixed-term contract, pay grade 13 TVöD-Bund, with the stated aim of permanent employment afterward. The post is based in Aachen and Jülich, with work initially primarily in Aachen.
