The University of Helsinki is advertising a Postdoctoral Researcher in Data Stewardship within the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, working at the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR), Department of Forest Sciences, Viikki campus, Helsinki, Finland.

This postdoctoral role sits at the intersection of data stewardship, research data management, FAIR/Open Science, training development, and knowledge exchange in environmental research infrastructures. The position is linked to two Horizon Europe projects: ST4RIS (Strengthening and Training for Research Infrastructure Staff) and STARDAST (Stewardship and Recognition for Data Science Talent). The work also connects to the Finnish eLTER community and broader European research infrastructure networks.

Responsibilities include conducting independent and collaborative research, assessing training needs, developing modular courses and workshops, creating openly reusable learning resources, delivering and evaluating training, supporting project documentation and communications, and contributing to practical FAIR implementation and interoperability work. Depending on the candidate’s background, the role may emphasize data stewardship, training, communication, coordination, or project implementation.

Applicants must hold a relevant doctorate before the start date. Suitable backgrounds include environmental science, data science or informatics, information studies, or education. The post calls for demonstrated scholarly contributions to environmental observation networks, research infrastructures, data stewardship, research data management, or FAIR/Open Science, along with strong English communication skills, facilitation ability, and experience in international or multidisciplinary settings. Experience with environmental research infrastructures, metadata standards, semantic interoperability, FAIR assessment tools, training-needs analysis, learning evaluation, competence-based education, digital learning environments, and Finnish language skills are considered advantages.

The appointment is fixed-term for one year, with a possible extension depending on project funding and continuation. The expected start is flexible between October 2026 and January 2027. Salary is based on the Finnish university salary system, with a typical starting salary of about €3700–€4000 per month depending on qualifications and experience.
