About this position

The Institute of Sociology at the University of Bern is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Digital Demography (80%) as part of the Digital Society Lab.

This postdoctoral opening focuses on the interrelations between demographic transformations and digital transformations. The successful candidate will contribute to research on topics such as aging, fertility, migration, and broader digital change, while also helping to coordinate and further develop a social science data platform.

The role includes collaboration on innovative research projects, participation in academic activities, and teaching contributions in the Bachelor and Master programs of the department. There is also room to further develop an independent research agenda.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a PhD in sociology or a related discipline, with relevant qualifications in sociology, demography, computational social science, or related fields. The post seeks experience in demographic research and digital social research, strong quantitative and data analysis skills, and interest in computational, data-driven approaches. Experience with data visualization or public-facing data platforms is an advantage. Teaching experience and experience with third-party funding applications are pluses. English proficiency is required; German is an advantage.

Funding and terms: this is a paid postdoctoral employment at 80% for a fixed term of 4 years. The annual gross salary is stated as CHF 91,000 to 108,000 on a full-time basis, excluding employer social security contributions.

Application deadline: 11 August 2026. The position starts on 1 January 2027 or by arrangement.

How to apply: submit a single PDF containing a short motivation letter, CV in tabular form, publication list with the three most relevant publications highlighted, two references, and copies of key certificates (university certificate and PhD diploma).
