About this position

University of Oulu is advertising a Postdoctoral Researcher position in Ecology and Genetics, within the Global Change and Biotic Interactions Ecology group led by Professor Anu Eskelinen. The project is funded by the Research Council of Finland and focuses on mechanisms of plant biodiversity change.

The research is centered on how plant biodiversity responds to global change drivers such as climate warming, nutrient enrichment, competition, herbivory, dispersal, seed banks, and intraspecific trait change. The successful candidate will work mainly with existing long-term experimental datasets, including the eDiValo experiment and a tundra experiment manipulating temperature, grazing, and nutrients. There may also be some experimental field work.

This is a research-intensive postdoctoral role with responsibilities including data analysis, manuscript writing, and publication in high-impact international journals. Additional duties may include teaching, co-supervising master's and doctoral students, contributing to new research proposals, and some administrative tasks. The position is based in Oulu, Finland, with collaboration opportunities involving international partners such as the University of Utrecht, iDiv, and the University of Helsinki.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in plant community ecology or a related field within the past 10 years; strong publication record; experience in plant biodiversity, experimental ecology, global change ecology, or trait-based plant ecology; excellent R and statistical/data management skills; knowledge of grassland ecosystems; strong English, communication, and teamwork skills.

Funding and terms: fixed-term for 2 years starting 1 February 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary is approximately EUR 3900–4300/month before taxes, plus a performance-based component. Full-time position with a 6-month trial period.

Application deadline: 15 November 2026. Apply through the University of Oulu recruitment system and include a motivation letter, CV, publication list, and contact details for two senior referees.
