About this position
Postdoctoral Researcher in Economics at the University of Helsinki, Department of Economics and Management, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry.
The position is part of the research project Intergenerational Transitions in the Nordics (NEXT), funded by the Peter Wallenberg Foundation and led by Professor Lucia Naldi (Jönköping University) and Professor Pia Nilsson (University of Helsinki). The project examines how inheritance and gift taxation shape intergenerational farm succession and the development of farm businesses in Sweden and Finland.
The postdoctoral researcher will work with econometrics, longitudinal administrative register data, applied microeconomics, and comparative empirical analysis. Tasks include building the Sweden–Finland empirical framework, identifying and dating ownership transitions, classifying transfer modes, distinguishing within-family and non-family transfers, and linking succession events to outcomes such as farm viability, investment, land-use continuity, and technological development.
The position is based at the Viikki campus in Helsinki and involves collaboration with the Agricultural Economics research group and project partners at Jönköping International Business School and CeFEO. The role also includes some teaching responsibilities (about 10–15%), including parts of an intermediate production economics course and a Master’s course in Production and Cost Theory.
Eligibility highlights: PhD in economics, agricultural economics, or a closely related field by the start date; strong econometrics and longitudinal methods; experience with administrative register or linked micro/owner/property/firm data; excellent English. Swedish/Finnish is optional but beneficial.
Funding and terms: fixed-term for two years with a six-month trial period; salary typically about 3,600–3,800 euros/month plus a performance-based component.
Application deadline: 2026-11-12 at 23:59 (EET). Apply via the University of Helsinki Recruitment System and submit a single PDF in English with a motivation letter, CV/publications, and two references.
