About this position

Nantes Université is advertising a postdoctoral researcher position in experimental physics within the XEMIS research programme led by the SUBATECH laboratory. The project focuses on innovative medical imaging systems based on liquid xenon Compton camera technology. The selected researcher will work on the XEMIS2 prototype, a large-scale detector installed at Nantes University Hospital (CHU Nantes), and will contribute to its scientific operation and exploitation.

The role combines detector instrumentation, cryogenic systems, time projection chambers, data acquisition, calibration, monitoring, and experimental campaign organisation. The postdoctoral researcher will help characterise and optimise the response of the two liquid-xenon TPCs, study charge and scintillation signals, electron transport, xenon purity, detector stability, and reconstruction performance, and support the preparation of the first imaging campaigns and preclinical imaging studies.

This is a multidisciplinary opportunity at the interface of nuclear and particle physics, medical physics, detector technology, and biomedical collaboration. The successful candidate will work closely with the SUBATECH XEMIS team, engineers, technical staff, and medical partners, with substantial autonomy in day-to-day operations and scientific exploitation of XEMIS2.

Eligibility highlights: strong experimental physics background, good programming and scientific data analysis skills, ability to troubleshoot complex instrumentation, and experience with detector systems or cryogenic/noble-liquid technologies is an advantage.

Location: Nantes, France.

Deadline: 14 November 2026.

How to apply: submit your application via the Beetween portal or use the Euraxess vacancy link provided in the post.

Funding details

Postdoctoral full-time temporary position; the post does not state a stipend amount or detailed funding package. It is not funded by an EU programme.

What's required

Strong background in experimental physics and genuine interest in detector instrumentation and complex experimental systems. Experience in detector physics, nuclear or particle physics, medical physics, or a related experimental field is expected. Candidates should have good scientific data analysis and interpretation skills, strong programming/computing skills, ability to work autonomously, organise and coordinate experimental operations, communicate clearly in oral and written form, and collaborate effectively with physicists, engineers, and biomedical partners. Experience with noble-liquid detectors, time projection chambers, cryogenic systems, radiation detectors, detector electronics, data acquisition systems, or detector simulation would be an advantage but is not mandatory.

How to apply

Apply through the Beetween application portal linked in the post. A Euraxess view/apply link is also provided for the same vacancy. Prepare your application materials and submit before the deadline.
