About this position

Postdoctoral opportunity in film history, gender studies, and archival research at the University of Caen Normandy.

Within the REVOICE project, Recovering Women’s Voices in the History of Film Culture: Journalists, Critics, and Editorial Workers in 1940s France and Italy, the successful candidate will investigate women’s contributions to film culture in France and Italy during the 1940s. The project is hosted by LASLAR (Laboratoire Lettres, Arts du spectacle, Langues Romanes) at Université de Caen Normandie and is centred on the often-invisible professional and social infrastructures that shaped film discourse.

The research will focus on journalists, critics, translators, editorial secretaries, and other editorial workers whose careers and networks influenced how film culture circulated across borders. The postdoctoral researcher will work primarily with archival collections, correspondence, working documents, and specialist and general-interest periodicals, while also contributing to a digital inventory of sources. The project combines film history, cultural history, gender studies, and digital humanities, with a transnational approach linking France and Italy.

The role includes two research stays at the SAGAS Department of the Università degli Studi di Firenze, enabling archival work in Italy and collaboration with the SAGAS research team. The Fellow will take part in the scientific activities of both LASLAR and SAGAS, help organise an international study day, present findings at major international conferences, publish research outputs, and support outreach activities for cultural heritage institutions, associations, and the wider public.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in History or Arts/Film Studies, with the doctorate awarded at least four years before application. Candidates should have archival experience and excellent command of French, Italian, and English.

Funding: the post is subject to FEDER funding under the regional programme “Objectif Labels d’excellence.”

Deadline: 31 August 2026 at 23:59 UTC. Expected start date: 1 October 2026 (fall 2026).

How to apply: send a detailed CV and cover letter in French by email to [email protected]. Applications will be reviewed in early September, and shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview.
