This postdoctoral project sits at the intersection of robotics, communication, and social science. The successful candidate will join the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, specifically the division of Interaction Design and Software Engineering, and will work within a research group in Human-Robot Interaction that includes PhD students, research assistants, and several robots. The project aims to develop a novel, universal framework for robot communication that is platform-independent and context-adaptive, helping robots better signal intentions and actions to people in real-world interactions.

The research combines theory-driven work with empirical investigation. It will involve data collection in real-world settings, controlled user studies, and the development of theoretical models of human-robot communication. The postdoc will collaborate with experts in linguistics and HRI, while also having room to build an independent research profile relevant to the group. The position is especially suited to researchers with experience or strong interest in verbal and/or nonverbal communication in human-robot interaction.

Eligibility requires a doctoral degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in Human-Robot Interaction, Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Robotics, Psychology, or a related field. Strong English communication skills are required, along with evidence of experience in HRI and interest in human-robot communication. The role also values independence, teamwork, clear communication, and a willingness to mentor junior colleagues. Helpful additional experience includes qualitative data analysis, user studies, meta-reviews, interdisciplinary work, student supervision, and research in the wild.

The appointment is a temporary full-time postdoc for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence is required throughout the employment. The start date is November 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.
