About this position

University College Cork is recruiting a Post-Doctoral Researcher (Immunologist) for the APC Microbiome Ireland team within the Microbe2Mind Initiative, an ambitious 5-year project focused on the microbiome–gut–brain axis and brain-body communication.

The role sits in a highly interdisciplinary environment led by Prof. John F. Cryan and involves close collaboration with postdoctoral researchers working in systems neuroscience and integrative biology. The successful candidate will take intellectual and experimental ownership of the immune component of the project and investigate how microbiome-derived signals influence peripheral and central immune function, brain function, behaviour, and physiological responses to chronic environmental challenges.

Research themes include experimental immunology, immune cell phenotyping, myeloid populations, cytokine and inflammatory signalling, microglial activation, and neuroimmune communication. The post also involves experimental design, implementation, analysis, and integration of immunological findings with microbiome and behavioural datasets.

This is a 24-month fixed-term, whole-time post with potential renewal up to 5 years subject to continued funding and satisfactory performance. Salary is on the IUA PD Salary Scale (€47,273–€53,925 p.a.).

Applicants should have strong experimental expertise in immunology, excellent organisational and analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research setting. Animal research will be conducted under relevant EU and Irish regulations. Garda vetting and/or international police clearance may form part of the selection process.

Apply online via the University College Cork vacancy portal before 12 noon (Irish local time) on 24 September 2026. Informal enquiries: Prof. John F. Cryan ([email protected]) or Dr. Lamya’a M. Dawud ([email protected]). Application queries: [email protected].
