About this position
The University of Helsinki Faculty of Humanities is advertising a fixed-term Postdoctoral Researcher in Language Technology or Digital Humanities position in the Multimodality Research Group, Department of Languages.
The project is funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant awarded to Professor Tuomo Hiippala and focuses on multimodal communication, including the study of how humans communicate through combinations of modes of expression. The research uses and develops large multimodal corpora drawn from page-based and audiovisual media such as school textbooks, news broadcasts, diagrams, and instruction manuals.
The successful candidate will work on building and annotating corpora, developing computational approaches using computer vision, large language models, and other machine learning methods, and evaluating annotations with human-in-the-loop approaches. The role also includes lead- and co-authored publications in suitable venues.
Eligibility requires a doctoral degree in language technology, digital humanities, or a related field, plus strong programming skills, experience with machine learning libraries, and prior work with large multimodal datasets. Experience with corpus building, data management, and high-performance computing is an advantage. Excellent English and teamwork skills are required, and the appointee is expected to reside in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.
The appointment lasts 28 months and starts in January 2027. Salary is EUR 4005–4140 per month depending on experience and qualifications.
