About this position
The University of Turku's Faculty of Technology, Department of Computing, is offering a two-year, fully funded postdoctoral researcher position in the field of Large Language Models (LLM). This opportunity is part of a European defense project that unites leading universities and industry partners across Europe. The successful candidate will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary team and contribute to innovative research focused on developing high-efficiency, small-to-medium LLMs optimized for edge computing. The research will involve advanced techniques such as compression, quantization, and distillation, enabling resource-constrained devices to perform complex AI tasks including real-time, context-aware sensing and local decision-making.
Responsibilities include close collaboration with top-tier European universities and industrial partners, participation in project implementation and reporting, and contributing to academic life through supervision of PhD, MSc, and Bachelor students, as well as assisting in teaching activities. The position also offers training opportunities in proposal writing, high-impact scientific publishing, and collaborative research with international teams.
Applicants must hold a PhD degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or have nearly completed all doctoral studies required for a PhD (exceptional cases may be considered as Project Researcher). Strong knowledge of machine learning, a robust publication record, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and proficiency in English are essential. The University values collegiality, equality, diversity, and inclusivity, and encourages applicants from all backgrounds.
The University of Turku is internationally recognized for its high-quality research and multidisciplinary profile. The Department of Computing is a central hub for digitalization, machine learning, autonomous and intelligent systems, cybersecurity, and health technology. The faculty is diverse, with over 2,000 graduate and postgraduate students and around 400 employees, including 50 professors.
Benefits include a fully funded position, opportunities to publish in top-tier cybersecurity journals and conferences, collaboration and visits to outstanding European universities and industrial partners, and access to training courses for academic researchers. The university provides flexible working hours, well-being services, and strong support for international hires.
The salary for a postdoctoral researcher ranges from 3600–4500 euros/month, depending on experience and qualifications. For Project Researchers, the starting salary is 3100–3300 euros/month. A six-month trial period applies. The position will be filled if the project is implemented, and the University reserves the right to leave the position open or extend the application period if necessary.
