About this position
Karolinska Institutet is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Liver Epidemiology within the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) in Solna, Sweden. The project sits in the gastrointestinal epidemiology group and focuses on understanding and preventing liver disease, especially alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, with potential work on PSC and MASLD. The research environment combines epidemiologists, clinicians, and database administrators in a highly collaborative and international setting.
The position draws on Sweden’s nationwide health registers and the unique ESPRESSO cohort, a large histopathology-based database of biopsy reports and linked healthcare information. This gives the successful candidate the opportunity to study risk factors and prognosis for diseases where histopathology is essential, using advanced register-based epidemiology and strong statistical methods.
The role is based at one of the world’s leading medical universities and includes opportunities to participate in research forums, seminars, and weekly supervision meetings. The department emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and offers a strong research infrastructure.
Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree by the time of appointment, with a degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a closely related field preferred. The post requires strong quantitative skills, experience with statistical software such as R, SAS, STATA, or SPSS, excellent English writing and speaking skills, and documented post-PhD research experience. Experience in register-based research and gastroenterology/hepatology is considered a merit, as is the ability to supervise PhD students and work both independently and in teams.
The appointment is for 2 years, with a possible extension after evaluation. The application deadline is 2026-08-03. Applicants must submit a CV, PhD certificate, personal letter, publication list, and summary of current work, and also complete a statistical task using materials provided through the linked GitHub repository. Applications are submitted via the Varbi recruitment system.
