About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher in Machine Learning and Dynamical Systems at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), based at CHT Erzelli, Genoa, Italy.

This postdoctoral opening sits in the Computational Statistics and Machine Learning Unit led by Massimiliano Pontil and is funded by the ERC Advanced Grant project LEO – Learning Evolution Operators. The project focuses on learning the dynamics underlying temporal phenomena from observed trajectories, with particular attention to linear evolution operators, their spectra, and interpretable representations of complex nonlinear systems.

Research themes include machine learning, dynamical systems, applied mathematics, operator theory, computational linear algebra, probability and statistics, partial differential equations, and stochastic differential equations. The role may involve theoretical foundations, algorithm development, scientific applications, open-source software, and collaboration with domain experts on atomistic systems and climate-related regime shifts.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in applied mathematics, computer science, physics, or a closely related field; strong expertise in at least one relevant technical area; strong publication record; programming skills in Python and TensorFlow; and strong English communication skills.

Funding and contract: collaboration contract for up to three years, with a gross annual salary of €37,500–€48,000. Private healthcare coverage may be available depending on the role and contract.

Application deadline: 31 October 2026. Apply online and submit a CV, a research statement (max 3 pages), and two reference letters.
