About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher opportunity in Medical Demography at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Germany, working with the Max Planck Research Group on Medical Demography led by Marcus Ebeling.

The group studies how medical progress changes the way people live with disease and how populations age, respond, and adapt. Core themes include disease presence and disease impact, diffusion of medical progress in populations, and population resilience and vulnerability. The position is designed for a researcher who wants to contribute to the group’s shared agenda while also developing an independent research line within medical demography.

Applicants should have, or soon obtain, a PhD in demography, epidemiology, medicine, public health, sociology, health economics, biostatistics, or a related field. The post is especially suitable for candidates with strong quantitative training, experience analyzing health-related data, and proficiency in R or Stata. The institute welcomes applicants whose background aligns with the group’s current work as well as those who can broaden its methodological or empirical scope.

Funding is provided through a full-time 3-year contract with salary according to the German public sector scale (TVöD Bund). The posting states approximate gross annual pay of €67,560 for researchers who have just completed their PhD, rising to about €77,700 for more senior scientists. MPIDR also offers relocation support of up to €2,000 and covers travel costs for taking up the position.

To apply, submit the application online in English via the linked survey/portal. Required materials include a CV, a one-page letter of interest, a two-page research statement, contact information for up to two academic referees, and one writing sample or publication. The deadline for full consideration is 2026-10-13. Interviews are tentatively planned for late October 2026, and the start date is flexible, preferably no later than Spring 2027.

Contact for inquiries: Marcus Ebeling ([email protected]).
