About this position
Inria Paris is advertising a postdoctoral research position in Medieval French philology within the ROMAM2 project, led by Thibault Clérice in the ALMAnaCH team (Automatic Language Modelling and Analysis & Computational Humanities). The project sits at the intersection of historical linguistics, material philology, dialectometry, Old French, Latin, and NLP evaluation.
The postdoc will build a multi-layer gold corpus from the Nouveau Corpus d’Amsterdam, align edited texts with manuscript transcriptions, annotate abbreviations in XML-TEI, and study how editorial normalization affects dialectal attribution in Old French. The work also includes auditing alignment data, contributing to lossless ALTO/plain-text/TEI conversion, and helping create reusable open datasets for the community.
The position is based at Inria Paris, France, and is part of a broader collaboration with Benoît Sagot, Rachel Bawden, David Smith (Northeastern University), and Ariane Pinche (CIHAM, ENS de Lyon). The team provides access to major resources such as the CATMuS dataset and the CoMMA corpus.
Eligibility highlights: PhD in philology, historical linguistics, medieval studies, or a related field; strong knowledge of Old French; palaeography and manuscript-reading experience; XML-TEI; statistics; and Python or R. Experience in dialectometry is highly valued, and knowledge of medieval Latin is an asset.
Funding and duration: 18-month temporary full-time postdoctoral contract starting 1 Mar 2027. No stipend amount is stated, but the role includes standard Inria employment benefits such as subsidized meals, transport reimbursement, teleworking options, leave, training, and social security coverage.
Deadline: 30 Nov 2026.
