About this position

IMDEA Energy is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for its newly established Nuclear Technology Unit in Madrid, Spain. The position focuses on modelling and simulation of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and other advanced nuclear technologies, with scope to contribute to core scientific and computational capabilities from the outset.

The successful candidate will work under the coordination of senior researchers in areas such as reactor physics and neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, multiphysics simulation, transient and safety analysis, and hybrid models / digital twins. The role is research-intensive and includes development of models and simulation tools, calculations and verification/validation work, participation in R&D projects, scientific publications, technical reports, conference contributions, and support for new research proposals.

This post is especially suitable for an early postdoctoral researcher with strong skills in scientific programming and computational analysis. The advert highlights experience or interest in Python, C/C++, Fortran, Julia, MATLAB, or scientific simulation codes, as well as advanced methods such as reduced-order models, scientific AI, uncertainty quantification, and digital twins. Applicants should be motivated to grow into increasing research autonomy within a multidisciplinary and collaborative environment.

Eligibility and requirements: a PhD or equivalent in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Energy Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related discipline; an early postdoctoral profile with an indicative maximum of four years of research experience after the PhD; experience in modelling, simulation, computational methods, or the analysis of physical/energy systems; fluent written and spoken English; and evidence of scientific output and project participation. Experience with reactor physics, neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, multiphysics, SMR technologies, reduced-order modelling, scientific AI, uncertainty quantification, or digital twins will strengthen the application.

Funding and conditions: the contract is permanent and full-time (40 hours/week). Remuneration is stated as 40,000€ to 44,000€ per year, depending on qualification and expertise, and the contract includes the benefits of the Spanish Public Health and Social Security System.

Deadline: 24 September 2026, 00:00 (Europe/Madrid). Applications are submitted online via the employer’s website.

Institution: Fundacion IMDEA Energia, Madrid, Spain.
