About this position
Ghent University in Belgium is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for the Flanders Make IRVA project IMVEP (Integrated Multi-Voltage Electric Powertrain). The position is based in Gent Zwijnaarde, Vlaanderen and is hosted in the EnSy lab / MIRO core lab within the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture.
The research focuses on power electronics, multilevel inverters, electrical drives, and electric powertrains. The successful candidate will design, build, and experimentally validate a multilevel inverter prototype for high-speed electric drive applications; develop modulation and control strategies; create loss, thermal, and cost models; assess insulation stress and partial discharge in inverter-fed machines; and support experimental campaigns on motor test benches and hardware-in-the-loop setups.
The project is carried out with Flanders Make MotionS, Flanders Make @ VUB-MOBI, and industrial partners in a user group. The role also includes system-level validation, interaction with industry, dissemination through publications and reports, and supervision of master's and PhD students.
Eligibility highlights: a doctoral degree in electrical or electromechanical engineering is required, with strong postdoctoral and/or industrial experience in converter prototype design and validation. Experience with multilevel inverter topologies (T-type, NPC, cascaded H-bridge), Si IGBT and wide-bandgap devices (SiC, GaN), embedded control platforms (DSP, FPGA, dSPACE), MATLAB/Simulink, high-voltage lab work, and insulation coordination is expected. Preferred experience includes partial discharge, loss modelling under non-sinusoidal supply, reliability analysis, EMI-aware design, and student supervision.
Funding: full-time contract of indefinite duration with salary scale PD1 to PD4 for doctoral degree holders. The earliest start date is 2026-12-01.
Deadline: apply online before 2026-10-26 23:59 Brussels time.
How to apply: submit your application through Ghent University’s e-recruitment system. Upload a merged CV and transcript, a cover letter, and a diploma transcript (with translation if needed). Do not send applications by email.

What's required
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in electrical or electromechanical engineering, with specialisation in power electronics, electrical drives, or a closely related field. Substantial postdoctoral and/or industrial experience is required in designing, building, and experimentally validating power electronic converter prototypes, including schematic design, PCB layout, and magnetic component design. Required experience includes multilevel inverter topologies and control, Si IGBT and wide-bandgap devices (SiC, GaN), digital control on DSP/FPGA/dSPACE or similar platforms, hardware-in-the-loop or real-time simulation, modelling and simulation in MATLAB/Simulink, and high-voltage laboratory work with insulation coordination and safety. Strong English communication/reporting skills and ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary industrial research project are expected. Preferred: partial discharge or insulation stress experience, loss modelling under non-sinusoidal supply, reliability analysis, EMI-aware design, and supervision experience.
How to apply
Apply online through Ghent University’s e-recruitment system before the deadline. Upload a merged CV and academic transcript PDF, a cover letter PDF, and a diploma transcript (plus translation if needed). Do not email the application; use the online system only.
