About this position
The CElNext project at INSERM / l’Institut du thorax offers a postdoctoral researcher opportunity in multiscale computational cardiac electrophysiology. The project aims to build a next-generation mathematical framework for cardiac electrical behaviour, linking subcellular ion-channel organization to cellular and tissue-scale dynamics. A major application area is the study of arrhythmogenic mechanisms, including Brugada syndrome.
The successful candidate will work at the interface of applied mathematics, scientific computing, computational biophysics, and cardiac electrophysiology. The research focus is the numerical development and implementation of ultrastructure-resolved cardiomyocyte models. Core tasks include developing and validating a high-resolution TT-JSR dyadic microdomain model, implementing stochastic calcium-release-unit dynamics and localized electrodiffusion formulations, integrating dyadic modules into a geometrically resolved whole-cell EMI cardiomyocyte model, and running large-scale simulations, parameter sweeps, and sensitivity analyses.
Associated activities include collaboration with electrophysiology and ion-channel experts at l’Institut du thorax, documenting code, contributing to open-source and reproducible workflows, analysing results, preparing manuscripts, and presenting findings at scientific meetings and conferences. The post also includes participation in scientific exchanges within the CElNext team and some contribution to supervision.
The position is a fixed-term postdoctoral contract for 12 months, renewable once, full time, with a gross monthly salary of 2,939 € to 3,336 € depending on professional experience. The post is based in Nantes, France, at INSERM / l’Institut du thorax. It is related to a research infrastructure and is not funded through the EU Research Framework Programme.
Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in applied mathematics, computational science, scientific computing, physics, computational biophysics, biomedical engineering, or a closely related discipline. Strong numerical-methods and programming skills are essential, especially in C++, Python, or similar languages. Experience with PDE-based modelling, stochastic processes, and biophysical simulation is highly desirable. The role also requires comfort with Linux/HPC environments, large numerical simulations, independent and collaborative work, and clear scientific communication in English.
The application deadline is 11 September 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Paris). Applications should be sent by email to [email protected].
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
How to apply
Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent via the online portal before the deadline.
