The Bridging AI and Neuroscience (BrAIN) group, led by Mariya Toneva, is recruiting for the newly funded ERC Starting Grant project BrainAlign. The project sits at the intersection of machine learning, natural language processing, computational neuroscience, neuroimaging, and cognitive neuroscience.
Research focus: developing methods to integrate heterogeneous fMRI datasets and training/evaluating brain-aligned language models (BALMs) that learn from human brain activity during naturalistic language comprehension. The role will lead the computational neuroscience component and contribute to model development, evaluation, and experimental design.
Ideal background: PhD (or expected completion before start date) in computational neuroscience, machine learning, computer science, cognitive neuroscience, or a related field; strong ML/computational modeling experience; desirable experience with fMRI/neuroimaging; strong Python and PyTorch skills; strong publication record; excellent English; ability to work independently in a highly interdisciplinary team.

What's required
Applicants must have a PhD or expect to complete a PhD before the start date in computational neuroscience, machine learning, computer science, cognitive neuroscience, or a related discipline. Strong experience with machine learning and/or computational modeling is required, and experience with neuroimaging data, especially fMRI, is highly desirable. Strong programming skills in Python and modern deep-learning frameworks such as PyTorch are preferred. A strong publication record relative to career stage, ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary team, and excellent written and spoken English are required. Experience with NLP, language models, encoding/decoding models, representational similarity analysis, or cross-subject modeling is valuable but not required.
