About this position
Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science, invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in probabilistic turbulence models within the Scientific Computing research group. The position is part of the ERC Consolidator project SYMBIOSIS, which aims to develop entropy-based closure models for turbulent flows, combining physical and information-theoretic perspectives to enable entropy-stable simulations of fluid flow. The research framework integrates model reduction, stochastic modelling, and data assimilation to construct adaptive, probabilistic turbulence models, with applications to wind-turbine wakes and CO2 transport.
The SYMBIOSIS project comprises several PhD and postdoc positions, offering opportunities for collaboration across universities and knowledge institutes, notably with Eindhoven University of Technology. The main supervisor for this position is Dr. Benjamin Sanderse, who is affiliated with both CWI and Eindhoven University of Technology. The Scientific Computing group at CWI is renowned for advances in scientific machine learning, uncertainty quantification, partial differential equations, and computational fluid dynamics, with ongoing projects in structure-preserving machine learning and model reduction for fluid flows.
Applicants must hold a PhD in applied mathematics, physics, or a related discipline, and demonstrate strong expertise in at least one of the following areas: numerical analysis, stochastic methods, generative machine learning, computational fluid dynamics, or data assimilation. A strong mathematical background, keen interest in fluid flow simulation, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Julia are essential. Candidates should exhibit proven independence in research, excellent academic writing and presentation skills, and a collaborative spirit, as the role involves teamwork within the SYMBIOSIS group and supervision of PhD candidates. Fluency in English is required.
The appointment is for two years, with a gross monthly salary ranging from €4,725 to €5,758 depending on experience. Additional benefits include an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.33% year-end bonus, as well as flexible scheduling and attractive working conditions in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres. CWI is committed to diversity and inclusion, actively encouraging applications from candidates of all backgrounds and prioritizing gender balance in research positions.
To apply, candidates should submit a detailed CV, a complete list of courses and grades, copies of their Master and PhD thesis, two relevant articles, a motivation letter, and at least two references via the application portal by 31st August 2026. Applications received before the deadline will be fully considered. For further information, contact Dr. Benjamin Sanderse at [email protected] or visit the project FAQ and CWI websites. The Scientific Computing group offers a vibrant, international research environment at Science Park Amsterdam, with access to interdisciplinary collaborations and after-work activities.
