About this position
Texas A&M Engineering is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at College Station, Texas. The project centers on the Autonomous Robotic Metallurgist (ARM), an NSF Materials Innovation Platform and a closed-loop, AI-driven laboratory for alloy discovery.
The postdoc will design and build the automation system beneath the campaign-planning layer, including PLC and instrument control, software coordination across stations, and the interface to Bayesian optimization logic that selects the next experiment. The role includes working on automated arc melting, hot rolling, characterization, mechanical testing, robotic sample transfer, safety interlocks, fault detection, and staged commissioning from simulation to hardware.
Strong fit areas include robotics, mechatronics, controls engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and related fields. Helpful experience includes PLC programming (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, or equivalent), HMI development, industrial protocols such as OPC UA, Modbus, EtherNet/IP, or PROFINET, Python-based instrument control, AI/ML-based control, ROS/ROS2, robot arms, digital twins, computer vision, and functional safety practice.
This is a postdoctoral opening, with an initial one-year appointment and renewal contingent on performance and funding. The posting notes a commensurate salary and a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, retirement, paid leave, training access, tuition assistance, and wellness programs.
Applicants should submit a resume/CV, three references with contact information, and a letter of interest if required. Applications must include all required data in the Workday portal to avoid rejection.
