About this position

The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL) in Norwich, United Kingdom is advertising two postdoctoral researcher positions in the Wenbo Ma group, one experimental and one bioinformatics-focused. The project centers on small RNA-based plant immunity and the application of this knowledge to crop disease resistance. The positions are funded by the ERC-Advanced grant “sRNA-Defense”.

Researchers will join a world-class, collaborative environment with opportunities to work with colleagues at TSL and national/international collaborators, and may also engage with industrial partners. The lab emphasizes open science, multidisciplinary teamwork, hypothesis-driven research, and career development for early-career researchers.

Required background includes a PhD in bioinformatics, genomics, plant science, or a closely related field, plus a strong publication record and excellent organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills. The bioinformatics role additionally requires extensive experience with omics data analysis and high-performance computing. Experience in RNA biology and/or plant immunity is desirable.

The contract is initially for 48 months with a flexible start date. Salary is up to £46,485 per year depending on experience. Some applicants may be eligible for UK Skilled Worker visa sponsorship, subject to individual assessment.

To apply, submit a single PDF containing a CV, contact details for 2–3 referees, and a one-page cover letter, and quote reference WM2026-01. Applications are reviewed from 1 September 2026 and remain open until suitable candidates are appointed.
