About this position
Postdoctoral Researcher in Space Physics at the University of Oulu, Finland.
This opening is part of the SafeEarth Research Programme and the Ionospheric Physics research group in the Space Physics and Astronomy Research Unit at the Faculty of Science. The project focuses on how solar storms and space weather affect the near-Earth high-latitude ionosphere and technological systems, with a strong emphasis on geomagnetic storm effects, the ionosphere-thermosphere system, and observational/ modelling approaches.
The successful candidate will work with a comprehensive set of measurements from ground-based instruments and satellites, including incoherent scatter radars such as EISCAT and EISCAT_3D (when available). Use of data-driven or physics-based models is encouraged. The role sits within a multidisciplinary research community and connects to the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Space Resilience and SafeEarth space research funded by the Research Council of Finland.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Space Physics or a closely related field, completed before the application deadline and awarded no more than 10 years ago; strong English and communication skills; good programming skills in Matlab or Python; prior experimental space physics research experience; and familiarity with incoherent scatter radar data is a strong advantage.
Funding and contract: fixed-term appointment for 3 years, starting in September 2026 or later. The salary is based on the Finnish university salary scale (demand level 5) plus a personal performance component, with a starting gross salary of approximately 3900 EUR/month before taxes. A 6-month trial period applies.
Application deadline: 10 August 2026 at 23:59 Finnish local time.
How to apply: submit the application through the University of Oulu recruitment system. Include a cover letter, full CV, publication list, brief research and action plan, and contact details for two referees. Applications sent by email will not be considered.
