This postdoctoral opening is part of the funded COWAMA project on content-based watermarking for AI-generated audio. The work will be carried out in the Department of Information and Communications Engineering (DICE) at Aalto University, with access to strong research infrastructure including CPU/GPU clusters, CSC/LUMI computing, and the Aalto Acoustics Lab. The role involves developing deep content-based watermarks, detection and perceptual quality measures, robustness evaluation, differentiable augmentation tools, and realistic attack scenarios. Methods may include audio content detection, music information retrieval, audio fingerprinting, alignment search, feature matching in self-supervised audio representations, and reference-free audio quality prediction.
The position is supervised by Assistant Professor Lauri Juvela and connected to an international collaboration network including Prof. Junichi Yamagishi, Prof. Xavier Serra, and Prof. Gustav Eje Henter. The group works on deep generative models for speech and audio, speech synthesis, differentiable signal processing, deepfake detection, and watermarking.
Applicants should have a doctoral degree or be close to completion in speech/audio processing, machine learning, signal processing, computer science, or a related field. Strong deep learning experience, programming skills (preferably Python), and interest in generative audio technologies are expected. English fluency is required; Finnish is not required.
The position is fixed-term for 2 years, with project funding available for 4 years and possible extension. The starting salary is 4220 €/month. The position starts in January 2027 or by mutual agreement. Deadline: 31 October 2026.

What's required
A doctoral degree, or near completion of a doctoral degree, in speech or audio processing, machine learning, signal processing, computer science, or a related field is required. Applicants should have strong experience with deep learning and generative models, programming skills preferably in Python and modern deep learning frameworks, and interest in speech synthesis, music generation, neural audio codecs, diffusion models, audio language models, watermarking, deepfake detection, audio quality assessment, or audio representation learning. Independent research ability, publication potential, good collaboration and communication skills, and fluency in English are required; Finnish is not required. Doctoral- and master’s-level supervision experience is an advantage.
