About this position
Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI) at Institute of Science Tokyo is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in a newly established laboratory led by Soyoung Park. The lab integrates organic chemistry and chemical biology to develop functional nucleic acids as molecular platforms for studying molecular recognition, catalysis, immunity, and the origin of life.
The research program includes DNA hybrid catalysts and DNA metalloenzymes, chemically modified fluorescent nucleic acids, non-canonical nucleic acid structures such as Z-DNA and Z-RNA, and prebiotic synthesis of biomolecules and chemical evolution. The successful candidate will contribute to the design, synthesis, and functional characterization of chemically modified nucleic acid systems, combining organic synthesis, spectroscopy, and chemical biology.
Typical responsibilities include organic synthesis and modification of nucleic acids and related compounds, purification and structural characterization, biophysical characterization using UV-Vis and CD spectroscopy, development of new experimental systems, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and support for laboratory operations. Applicants with experience in organic chemistry, nucleic acid biochemistry, chemical biology, spectroscopy (NMR, MS, IR, fluorescence), or biophysical methods are especially encouraged to apply.
This is a non-tenure-track fixed-term postdoctoral position with a 1-year contract from the date of hire, extendable. The salary is approximately 4–7 million yen per year (monthly base salary ¥353,000–¥520,000 depending on experience), and transportation expenses plus standard employee insurance coverage are provided.
The position is based in Tokyo, Japan (Ookayama, Meguro-ku). Applications are accepted until 2026-08-31, and review is ongoing, so early submission is recommended. Required documents include a CV, publication list, selected reprints, grant/fellowship history, research plan for ELSI, and two references.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
How to apply
Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent via the online portal before the deadline.
