About this position
Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig, Germany is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d) in the research group NIBI led by Dr. Christian Sieben.
The project sits at the intersection of virology, cell biology, microscopy, and infectious diseases. The group studies how viruses use and alter cellular structures for entry and assembly, how they exploit plasma membrane signaling, and how these mechanisms can be used to inhibit infection. A key goal is to block virus attachment to sialic acids and develop a broadly effective antiviral strategy by screening binding competitors, testing their ability to prevent virus attachment, and defining active concentration ranges.
The position involves scientific work in an interdisciplinary project, development and optimization of a testing platform for new antiviral compounds, and research using advanced live-cell imaging in laboratories up to BSL3.
Requirements include a completed scientific university degree in natural sciences, a PhD in cell biology, virology, or a comparable field, strong English skills, independent experimental planning, and solid methods knowledge in cell biology and microscopy. Experience in virology, advanced microscopy techniques such as FRAP, particle tracking, and single-molecule imaging, as well as custom computational data analysis/programming, is advantageous.
The appointment is initially for 1 year with salary at E 13 TV EntGO Bund for 39 hours/week. Applications must be submitted through the career portal and should include a cover letter, CV, references, and certificates.
Deadline: 2026-09-03. Work location: Braunschweig, Germany.
