About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Human-Robot Interaction and Robotics at AIST, Japan

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher (Special Research Fellow) in the Intelligent Systems Research Division, Task-Based Intelligent Robotics Research Group, located in Tokyo, Japan. The project centers on human-robot interaction (HRI), including two-way skill learning between robots and humans, collaborative/cooperative work, robot control, operation interface development, AI construction, and technologies that support human physical functions.

This opportunity is aimed at researchers with a doctoral degree in a field related to HRI such as engineering, information science, science, psychology, or medicine. Applicants should have strong research achievements in HRI, be able to communicate in Japanese or English, and have earned the doctorate within the last 7 years. AIST also requires fewer than 5 years of employment experience in the same category at AIST. Preferred experience includes control of highly multi-degree-of-freedom robots such as humanoids and robotic motor learning methods such as reinforcement learning, imitation learning, and VLA.

The position is a fixed-term contract role running until March 31, 2028, with possible renewal depending on performance, workload, and budget, but not beyond March 31, 2031. Compensation is an hourly wage of 2,500–2,700 yen, with paid leave, commuting allowance, and social insurance provided if eligible.

The work location is AIST Waterfront Subcenter, Aomi, Koto-ku, Tokyo, Japan. The application window runs from October 13, 2026 to November 30, 2026, and applications may close early once a suitable candidate is found.

To apply, submit the required electronic documents by email to [email protected], including a resume, list of achievements, proof of doctoral degree acquisition or expected acquisition, a summary of previous research, and a declaration form. The public recruitment page is available via the AIST posting link.
