About this position

Météo-France / CNRS, through the Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques (CNRM) and its CEMS Sounding Team in Lannion, is recruiting a Research Scientist / Postdoctoral Researcher for a European Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) project focused on historical satellite observations and climate reanalysis.

The role sits within the Satellite Data Rescue initiative, supporting the preparation of rescued satellite data for the next generation of reanalyses, including ERA6. The work is centered on extending and improving the RTTOV radiative transfer model for selected historical instruments, especially gas correlation spectroscopy sensors, and on evaluating how historical atmospheric CO2 concentrations and upper-atmosphere structure affect radiative transfer simulations.

Research themes include radiative transfer modelling, satellite remote sensing, meteorology, atmospheric science, and climate data assimilation. The successful candidate will characterize historical satellite instruments, refine their representation in simulation tools, investigate sensitivity to the upper stratosphere and mesosphere, and support assimilation experiments using rescued satellite observations spanning roughly 1960 to 2006.

The position is part of a consortium led by SPASCIA with partners including the University of Reading and ICARE. The post involves collaboration with European research institutions, reporting progress to the consortium, contributing to deliverables, presenting results at meetings, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Eligibility: a PhD in atmospheric sciences, physics, meteorology, remote sensing, or a related field is required. Applicants should have strong scientific programming skills in Fortran, Python, and/or Shell scripting, plus experience with scientific data formats such as NetCDF and HDF. Excellent English communication skills are required; French is an advantage.

Funding: this is a paid research employment position; no stipend amount is stated in the post. The role is based in Lannion, Brittany, France.
