About this position
Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is recruiting two postdoctoral researchers for a new interdisciplinary programme in geometry, numerical analysis, and scientific computing. The project is based in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and is carried out in close collaboration with colleagues in Electrical Engineering. It aims to build the mathematical foundations for next-generation digital twins: computational representations of physical systems that preserve geometric structure, physical consistency, and mathematical invariants over time.
The research vision combines differential geometry, numerical analysis, scientific computing, dynamical systems, and applied mathematics. One postdoc will focus on geometric and structure-preserving methods for models of physical systems, including geometric numerical integration, finite-volume and finite-element methods, variational formulations, structure-preserving discretisations, optimal transport, and numerical analysis of partial differential equations. The second postdoc will focus on geometric representation of complex data and physical systems, with themes such as differential geometry, invariant theory, algebraic and metric geometry, symmetry, geometric data analysis, and infinite-dimensional geometric structures.
Both researchers will work closely with Professors Rafael Bailo and Mireille Boutin and contribute to a coherent long-term research programme at the interface of geometry, analysis, scientific computing, and computational mathematics. The positions offer substantial freedom to pursue original mathematical ideas while contributing to problems with clear technological relevance for digital twins and future computing architectures.
Applicants should hold a PhD in Mathematics or a closely related field and have a strong research background in one or more of the listed areas. A record of independent research is expected, along with excellent English communication skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting. Experience in structure-preserving methods, geometric integration, finite-element or finite-volume methods, geometric or variational PDE approaches, geometric data analysis, scientific machine learning, or physics-informed computation is considered an advantage.
The appointments are full-time for 3 years. Salary is according to Dutch university scale 10, with a gross monthly range from €4,422 to €5,760, plus an 8.3% year-end bonus and 8% vacation pay. Additional benefits include training opportunities, a strong research environment, commuting/home-working support, immigration assistance, and moving-expense compensation. The role also includes a modest teaching load.
