About this position
Senckenberg Society for Nature Research (SGN) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, is recruiting for the VEBITA project: 2 Postdoctoral Researchers in Movement Ecology, 1 Data Scientist (50%), and 1 Scientific Coordinator (50%). The positions are embedded in the transdisciplinary project Behavioural Plasticity in a Changing World: Biologging as a Key to Understanding Animal Adaptability (VEBITA), led jointly by SGN, Marburg University, and the Institute for Social-Ecological Research (ISOE).
The postdoctoral roles focus on movement ecology, behavioural ecology, macroecology, and trait-based ecology. PostDoc #1 will work on diversity, plasticity, and adaptability of animal movements using biologging data and MoveTraits; PostDoc #2 will study terrestrial animal movements, functional connectivity, landscape permeability, and barrier behaviours in mammals, especially nomadic and migratory ungulates. Both roles require a PhD in ecology or a related field, strong quantitative/R skills, and a strong publication record.
The Data Scientist role focuses on building and maintaining the FAIR open-access MoveTraits database, relational database infrastructure, R package development, data pipelines, and integration with Movebank and other repositories. The Scientific Coordinator will support consortium management, reporting, communication, workshops, stakeholder engagement, and coordination of the VEBITA Knowledge Hub.
Funding and conditions: postdoctoral positions are paid under TV-H E13, with full-time or part-time options; the Data Scientist and Scientific Coordinator are each 50% positions. The contract is limited to 4 years until 31.12.2030. Benefits include flexible working hours, mobile working, museum admission, annual special payment, vacation entitlement, and pension plan.
How to apply: submit one PDF through the online application form by 15 November 2026. Applicants may apply for more than one position and should clearly state the relevant reference numbers. Include a cover letter, CV, two referees, and publications/writing samples where relevant. Questions can be directed to Prof. Dr. Thomas Mueller at [email protected].
