About this position

University of California, Santa Barbara is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scholar in agrivoltaics systems analysis and modeling through the Environmental Studies Program and affiliated with The 2035 Initiative. The project is led by the Spatial Climate Solutions Lab and focuses on building an adaptable, open-source modeling framework to evaluate the technical and economic potential of dual-use solar-and-crop systems.

The research is centered on agrivoltaics, solar PV performance modeling, biophysical/crop modeling, techno-economic assessment, geospatial analysis, and large-scale environmental data workflows. The scholar will develop a high-resolution modeling pipeline that translates site-level biophysical data into regional and national assessments, with emphasis on the United States and India. The role also includes calibrating and validating models using operational agrivoltaic datasets from India, including PV performance and crop yield data, and contributing to empirical analysis and experimental design.

Applicants should have completed all Ph.D. requirements except the dissertation at the time of application in engineering, environmental sciences, energy systems, agricultural sciences, data science, earth science, ecology, or a related field. By the start date, a Ph.D. or equivalent degree is required. Preferred experience includes agrivoltaics/ecovoltaics, solar PV modeling, crop modeling, TEA, Python, reproducible open-source coding, geospatial analysis, and working with NetCDF/Xarray or similar large gridded datasets.

This is a two-year, full-time postdoctoral appointment with a salary estimate of $69,073-$82,836. The position is located in Santa Barbara, California, United States. Applications are reviewed until the final deadline of 2026-09-30, with an earlier review date of 2026-03-06. To apply, submit the required CV, cover letter, research statement, and writing sample through the UCSB Recruit portal. Three to four reference letters are required.
