About this position

The University of Utah School of Architecture is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scholar in AI for Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), Building Decarbonization, and Thermal Comfort in Extreme Climates. This is a full-time postdoctoral appointment in Salt Lake City, Utah, beginning January 1, 2027 and running through December 31, 2028, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding.

The position sits within the School of Architecture and supports research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, indoor air quality, building performance optimization, energy modeling, thermal comfort, and building decarbonization. The scholar will conduct simulations, laboratory and field experiments, develop and improve numerical modeling tools, work with large datasets, and contribute to manuscripts, conference presentations, and grant proposals. Collaboration is expected across architecture, building science, computer science, health science, data science, civil/environmental engineering, and related areas.

Teaching opportunities are included: the successful candidate may co-teach with the lead supervisor or independently teach elective/design courses, with up to 2 courses per academic year.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a Ph.D. and have a strong background in architecture or architectural engineering. Required experience includes AI or machine learning, statistical analysis, IEQ, thermal comfort, indoor air quality, building decarbonization, smart building monitoring, building science, heating/cooling technologies, and EnergyPlus or similar simulation software. Strong communication skills, research productivity, and experience with laboratory experiments are also required. Preferred skills include Python, PyTorch, MATLAB, LabVIEW, C++, cloud computing, and work with large datasets.

Funding: salary is listed at $55,000 to $60,000 per year. The appointment is benefited staff and may be extended depending on satisfactory performance and funding availability.

Application deadline: applicants are encouraged to apply by November 15, 2026; the posting remains open until filled. Required materials include a cover letter, CV, three writing samples, and three references.
