About this position

Oklahoma State University is advertising a Postdoctoral Scholar position in Evapotranspiration Forecasting and Irrigation Decision Support within the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering in Stillwater, Oklahoma, United States.

The project focuses on turning NASA Earth observations into actionable forecasts for irrigators and water agencies. The successful candidate will lead the Oklahoma component of a multi-institution effort aimed at improving crop evapotranspiration (ET) forecasting, soil moisture assimilation, and irrigation demand estimation for major irrigated crops such as corn, soybean, cotton, sorghum, and alfalfa.

Research topics include remote sensing, hydrology, agricultural engineering, crop water modeling, geospatial data analysis, and scientific programming. The role involves integrating OpenET historical and near-real-time ET retrievals with GraphCast weather predictions, using NISAR, SMAP, and Sentinel-1 data, and developing machine-learning approaches to downscale soil moisture products. The scholar will also support reproducible data pipelines, quality assurance, field campaign coordination, and validation against eddy covariance towers, Mesonet observations, and producer irrigation records.

The position is based at Oklahoma State University and connects with the Oklahoma Agricultural Scientific Irrigation Scheduling (OASIS) tool, the Oklahoma Water Resources Board, and the Oklahoma Mesonet. The post is intended for a highly motivated researcher with a completed Ph.D. in a relevant field by the start date.

Eligibility highlights: Ph.D. in Biosystems/Agricultural Engineering, Civil or Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, Agronomy or Soil Science, Remote Sensing, Geography, Data Science, or a closely related field; first-authored peer-reviewed publications; strong programming skills; experience with large geospatial or time-series datasets; English communication skills; valid driver’s license; willingness to travel across Oklahoma.

Funding: salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience, and employee insurance/retirement benefits are available. The position is contingent on funding availability.

Application: submit a cover letter, CV, three references, and one representative publication/code/technical writing sample through the OSU jobs portal. Review begins 20 days after posting and continues until filled.
