About this position

The University of Pennsylvania is inviting applications for a 2-year Postdoctoral Research Scholar in the School of Engineering’s Computer and Information Science department, focused on public interest AI audits.

The project is Ford Foundation-funded and examines audited systems such as automated decision systems, online platforms, generative AI systems, and related technologies. Current lab interests include dynamic and surveillance pricing systems, generative AI political and creative speech, ads and product recommendations from generative AI systems, and longitudinal audits in elections, discrimination, and other socially and politically salient contexts.

The scholar will contribute across the full research pipeline: problem identification and experimental design, building computational infrastructure (scrapers and AI agents) for data collection, managing large-scale human subjects data collection, statistical analysis, public-facing websites/web apps, and communicating research findings.

Ideal applicants have prior experience with AI system audits and academic publication of findings, including techniques such as sock puppet audits, web scraping, user-facing mobile/web tool development, and statistical analysis. Strong interpersonal, writing, research, time management, and organizational skills are required.

The role is in-person and potentially hybrid, with expected presence in Philadelphia one to three days per week. Interested candidates should email Danaé Metaxa and Sorelle Friedler directly with the subject line Postdoc Applicant, attaching a CV and cover letter that addresses the six research activities and preferred start date.
