About this position
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), School of Public Health, Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences, is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the research program led by Dr. Nicholas Thomson.
This postdoctoral opening focuses on violence prevention research with work spanning gun violence and firearm-related harm, suicide and self-directed violence, interpersonal violence and aggression, conduct disorder and externalizing psychopathology, developmental psychopathology, psychophysiology, youth behavioral and mental health, and technology-enabled behavioral health and prevention research.
The fellow will contribute to federally funded studies and receive structured mentorship in scientific writing, grantsmanship, quantitative analysis, study design, and career development. Responsibilities include leading and co-authoring manuscripts, developing first-author publications, contributing to grant applications, analyzing longitudinal and intervention datasets, supporting study design and evaluation, and participating in research activities such as recruitment, assessments, data management, IRB support, and dissemination at scientific meetings.
The role is especially well suited to an early-career scientist seeking intensive mentorship while building an independent research program. Candidates with expertise or strong interest in suicide/self-directed violence are particularly encouraged. Experience in psychophysiology (for example autonomic measures, heart rate, heart-rate variability, electrodermal activity) and/or use of digital health, virtual reality, mobile technologies, wearable sensors, or ecological momentary assessment is highly desirable.
Eligibility: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree by the start date in psychology, public health, behavioral science, developmental science, neuroscience, criminology, or a closely related field; peer-reviewed publications; strong quantitative skills; and experience with R, SPSS, SAS, Stata, Mplus, or similar software.
