About this position

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is advertising multiple Postdoctoral Scholar openings in the Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics (ATAP) Division, within the Fusion Science & Ion Beam Technology Program.

The research focuses on physics, materials science, chemistry, and related experimental methods for measuring low-energy deuterium-deuterium cross sections and exploring deuterium fusion inside metal hydrides. The postdoc will help design and run experiments, develop and use novel instrumentation, measure fusion products such as neutrons, helium, and protons, and investigate material combinations, plasmonic structures, and other external triggers that may enhance fusion rates.

The role includes close collaboration with scientists and engineers at LBNL and partner experiments at the University of California, Davis. The postdoc will also interact with a theory group to connect experimental results with theoretical understanding of metal hydrides and fusion-related processes.

Typical duties include experiment design and analysis, sample preparation and measurement using nuclear techniques, micro-fabrication and cleanroom work, electrochemical loading of metals with deuterium, documentation of results, presentations, publications, and possible mentoring of students and visitors.

Eligibility highlights: recent Ph.D. in physics or a related field; experience in at least two of the listed areas (ion beams/lasers, nuclear detectors and electronics, low-count-rate experiments, electrochemistry, micro-fabrication/cleanroom); strong communication skills; ability to work independently and in a team; less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience.

Funding: full-time 2-year postdoctoral appointment with possible renewal. Salary is union-based and ranges from $5,756 to $9,136 per month, with an expected starting salary of $7,987/month or above depending on experience.

Location: Berkeley, California, United States.

Application: apply via the Berkeley Lab careers page. Applications are accepted until the posting is removed.
