About this position
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is hiring multiple Postdoctoral Scholars in the Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics (ATAP) Division, within the Fusion Science & Ion Beam Technology Program.
This opportunity focuses on physics, nuclear engineering, nuclear techniques for mining applications, and the detection of critical minerals and rare earth elements. The postdoc will work on associated particle imaging, X-ray technology, pulsed neutron techniques, and data fusion methods to analyze borehole measurements and mining ore products.
Responsibilities include designing and operating novel instrumentation, combining X-ray transmission measurements with pulsed neutron sources and associated particle imaging, developing traditional and/or AI-based data fusion methods, and contributing to FPGA-based data acquisition firmware. The role also involves hands-on experiments, collaboration with scientists and engineers, and publication/presentation of results.
The position is based at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, Berkeley, California, United States, with collaborations involving researchers at the University of California, Berkeley and industry partners.
Eligibility: applicants must hold a recent Ph.D. in physics, nuclear engineering, or a related field, and have experience in at least two of the following: neutron/X-ray experiments, neutron/gamma/X-ray detectors, FPGA data acquisition, data fusion, coding for data analysis and instrumentation/control, or MCNP/GEANT4 simulations. Strong publication, communication, teamwork, and independent working skills are expected. Applicants must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience.
Funding: full-time 2-year postdoctoral appointment with possible renewal; salary ranges from $5,756 to $9,136 per month, with an expected starting salary of $7,987/month or above depending on postdoctoral step rate.
Application: applications are accepted until the posting is removed. Apply via the Berkeley Lab careers portal using the job link.
