About this position

The University of Antwerp, a dynamic and forward-thinking institution, is seeking a full-time postdoctoral scholarship holder in statistical shape modelling within the Department of Physics, Faculty of Sciences. This position is part of the imec-Visionlab research group, renowned for its pioneering work in image processing and computer vision. The project aims to advance personalized musculoskeletal care by transforming routine imaging data, such as 2D X-rays and surface scans, into detailed 3D and 4D anatomical models. By leveraging AI models trained on high-end imaging modalities, the research bridges the gap between clinical practice and high-fidelity anatomical analysis.

The scientific objective is to develop a unified pipeline integrating generative AI, statistical shape modeling, and biomechanical soft tissue modelling. This approach enhances anatomical realism, motion consistency, and clinical interpretability, even with sparse, noisy, or low-resolution input data. The successful candidate will assist in ongoing research projects, coordinate project proposals, contribute to attracting external funding, and supervise PhD students.

Applicants must hold a PhD in physics, mathematics, engineering, or computer science from a non-Belgian institution (or obtain it by the start date). Essential qualifications include a strong background in shape modelling, deep generative modelling (diffusion/transformers), or multimodal representation learning, as well as strong programming skills in Python and preferably experience with PyTorch. A track record of publishing in top image processing or computer vision journals is required. Candidates must be fluent in English and demonstrate research qualities aligned with university policies.

The position offers a full-time appointment for 2 years, extendable by 1 year, with a monthly scholarship calculated according to the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (BAP). Additional benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting, access to cutting-edge computing infrastructure, and motion capture scanning facilities. Flexible working conditions and structured support for career development are provided. The preferred start date is June 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

To apply, candidates should use the University of Antwerp’s online job application platform, submitting a motivation letter and academic CV. The selection committee reviews applications promptly and notifies candidates of decisions. For job-related questions, contact Prof. Dr. Jan Sijbers at [email protected]. The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, encouraging applicants from all backgrounds.
