About this position

UCLouvain’s Earth and Life Institute is inviting applications for a full-time postdoctoral scientist position focused on Southern Ocean sea ice in Belgium. The role is part of the EU Horizon Europe-funded SYNCHRONY Project, an international effort to build a coordinated observatory across the Southern Ocean and Antarctic continental shelves.

The research sits at the intersection of Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physics, Computer Science, and Statistics, with emphasis on climate science, oceanography, large geophysical data analysis, machine learning, numerical modelling, and Antarctic climate research. The project aims to monitor rapid changes in the ocean–ice–atmosphere system and understand their impacts on global climate and biodiversity.

Eligibility highlights include a PhD in Climatology, Oceanography, Engineering, Earth Science, or a related discipline; experience with large geophysical datasets; publications in peer-reviewed international journals; expertise in machine learning, numerical modelling, or data science; and strong English communication skills.

Supervision is listed under Prof. François Massonnet and Prof. Hugues Goosse at UCLouvain. The position starts on 1 October 2026, and the application deadline is 31 August 2026. Interested candidates should use the linked job description/application page to apply.
