About this position
European XFEL is offering a funded postdoctoral scientist position in the EXPLODE research group, focused on resonant X-ray spectroscopy for fusion science. The project is part of the BMFTR-funded EXPLODE initiative (Experimental X-ray Platforms for Optimisation and Diagnosis of inertial fusion Energy) and centers on developing advanced X-ray scattering and spectroscopy diagnostics for high-temperature, high-density, fusion-relevant plasma experiments on XFELs.
The successful candidate will develop resonant X-ray spectroscopy methods for fusion-relevant experimental platforms, build and apply analysis and modelling approaches for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, help define experimental requirements and spectroscopic diagnostics for transient plasma states, and plan, coordinate, and participate in experiments at European XFEL and international facilities. Results will be disseminated through publications, conferences, and collaborations.
This is a full-time temporary postdoctoral role in Schenefeld, Germany, at European XFEL GmbH. The position is ideal for researchers with a strong background in X-ray spectroscopy, scattering, plasma physics, atomic physics, or related experimental and computational methods. The post is explicitly open to applicants with a PhD or equivalent in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or a closely related field.
Funding is provided through the BMFTR as part of the EXPLODE project (project code 13F1044). The advertised compensation follows German public-service salary scales, with a monthly gross range from 13/1 (€4,901.11) to 13/6 (€7,025.87), depending on experience, and an annual special payment of 75–95% of one month’s salary depending on pay group.
Eligibility highlights include experience with quantitative data analysis, experimental research at large-scale facilities, scientific computing such as Python, and strong English language skills. Desirable expertise includes resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, electronic-structure modelling, XFEL or synchrotron experiments, and backgrounds in warm dense matter, high energy density physics, laser-driven plasmas, or inertial fusion.
The application deadline is 18 November 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Berlin). Applicants should submit a CV, a motivation letter in English, and reference letters through the online application portal.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering or a closely related discipline. Required experience includes X-ray spectroscopy, scattering, atomic physics or plasma physics, quantitative analysis of experimental data, experimental research ideally at a large-scale research facility, independent research in a multidisciplinary team, and scientific computing preferably in Python or comparable tools. Beneficial experience includes resonant spectroscopic techniques such as resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, knowledge of atomic or electronic structure modelling including density functional theory or collisional-radiative approaches, familiarity with XFEL or synchrotron experiments, and background in warm dense matter, high energy density physics, laser-driven plasmas or inertial fusion research. Excellent English is required.
