About this position
Predoctoral PhD opportunity at the University of Vienna in marine microbial biogeochemistry, microbiology, and oceanography.
The working group of Marine Microbial Biogeochemistry at the Department of Functional and Evolutionary Ecology is recruiting a scientific project assistant (predoctoral) to join the research team around Dr. Thomas Reinthaler in the FWF-funded project “Variability of Ecologically Relevant Bacterioneuston (VERA)”. The project is carried out with the University of Oldenburg and partners at GEOMAR Kiel, and focuses on microorganisms in the sea-surface microlayer, the boundary layer between ocean and atmosphere, and their role in carbon cycling and marine biogeochemical processes.
The successful candidate will investigate which bacteria are active at the air-sea interface and how they vary seasonally and along an Atlantic transect. Methods include CARD-FISH, BONCAT, Redox Sensor Green (RSG), flow cytometry, microscopy, metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and bioinformatic analysis using tools such as R and Linux. The role is approximately 85% laboratory and field work and 15% bioinformatics.
This is a 3.5-year paid predoctoral employment starting 2027-02-01 at 30 hours per week (75%). The post includes doctoral training within the Vienna Doctoral School of Ecology and Evolution (VDSEE), access to state-of-the-art facilities, and a gross salary of about EUR 2,832 per month at 2026 rates for the 30-hour position.
Eligibility highlights: completed Master’s degree (or equivalent) in marine biology, microbiology, biological oceanography, biogeochemistry, or a closely related field; experience in molecular/microbiological lab methods and fluorescence microscopy; bioinformatics skills; excellent English; strong teamwork and communication skills; willingness to travel to Kiel for monthly sampling in the first project year and to join the RV METEOR cruise in 2028.
How to apply: submit a 1–2 page motivation letter including an AI-use statement, a concise tabular CV (max 3 pages), a copy of the Master’s thesis, and contact details for two referees via the University of Vienna job portal.
Deadline: 2026-11-20.
