About this position

IBEC (Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia) in Barcelona is recruiting a Predoctoral Researcher for the Smart Nano-Bio-Devices Research Group. The PhD project focuses on the design and application of enzyme-powered nanomotors for the treatment of osteoarthritis and joint-related diseases.

The research includes synthesis and functionalization of highly biocompatible organic-based nanoparticles, study of nanobot motion dynamics in viscous biological barriers such as synovial fluid, and in vitro/in vivo evaluation of targeted delivery and tissue regeneration. The project also covers internalization, tissue distribution, biocompatibility, and comparison of active motion versus passive diffusion for therapeutic delivery.

Academic background: degree and Master’s in chemistry, materials science, biology, nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, or a related field. Experience in nanoparticles, drug delivery systems, nanomedicine, active matter, biomaterials, 3D cell culture models, or in vivo imaging is valued. High-level English and strong teamwork, communication, and analytical skills are expected.

Funding and conditions: one full-time 3-year contract. IBEC offers training, mobility grants, mentoring, work-life balance measures, and support for foreigners with visa/work-permit procedures and relocation to Barcelona.

Application deadline: 12 August 2026. Apply through the IBEC careers portal: https://careers.ibecbarcelona.eu/. Reference: Phd-SS. Contact: jobs@ibecbarcelona.eu.
