About this position

This PhD project at Aston University, based in the College of Health and Life Sciences, investigates the prevalence, ocular biomarkers, and interventions for myopia progression in children. Myopia is a growing global public health concern, projected to affect half the world's population by 2050, and is associated with increased risks of sight-threatening conditions such as myopic macular degeneration, retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataract. The project aims to provide evidence-based strategies to manage and slow myopia progression, reducing long-term ocular complications.

The research will analyze longitudinal clinical data from children attending optometric practices, focusing on two age groups (6–7 years and 12–14 years). Data sources include axial length measurements, refractive error status, OCT scans, and fundus images. These will be compared with established cohort studies like the Aston Eye Study and the PreMO database to identify regional differences in refractive patterns and axial elongation. A key objective is to identify ocular biomarkers—such as axial length growth rate, choroidal thickness, and retinal morphology—that are associated with myopia and its progression, potentially enabling earlier detection of children at risk of rapid progression.

The project will also evaluate the effectiveness of current myopia control interventions, including specialized spectacle lenses and contact lenses, used in clinical practice. The findings are expected to inform earlier identification of high-risk children and guide more effective, evidence-based intervention strategies for myopia management.

The position is based at the Aston Campus in Birmingham, UK, and requires regular in-person attendance. The project covers Home tuition fees; overseas applicants are welcome but must pay the difference between Home and Overseas tuition fees (£17,712 for 2026/7). Applicants should have a strong academic background in a relevant subject, with specific degree requirements outlined below.
