About this position
The Fundació Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya (IREC) is recruiting an R2 PhD Researcher in energy systems modelling within the Energy Systems Analytics research department. The role focuses on the final development and integration of advanced modelling, control and optimization tools, and business models for smart energy systems and distributed energy resources.
The selected researcher will work on the consolidation and refinement of modelling and optimization tools to ensure they are robust and ready for real-world application in national projects. Key tasks include validating business models for energy storage systems management and operation, integrating energy management algorithms into a commercial platform, and supporting applications involving energy communities, storage systems, and flexibility. The position also includes mentoring support for junior researchers or engineers and contributing to dissemination activities such as scientific papers and conference participation.
This is an R2-level position offered for 18 months in the framework of SYNERGEC national projects, with salary conditions determined by IREC’s salary policy and adjusted according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The post is based in Barcelona, Spain, at IREC in Sant Adrià de Besòs.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Electrical Engineering or a similar Energy Systems-oriented field and have at least 3 years of experience in energy system modelling and/or control. Strong knowledge of energy markets, business model development, and Python is required. The role also requires excellent spoken and written ability in Spanish, Catalan, and English. Desirable experience includes publication authorship, conference participation, and technical leadership in national or European R&D projects.
