About this position

Research Fellow in Computational Electromagnetics at University College London (UCL), Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

This post sits within the Photonics Group and is part of a broader multi-institution project involving Queen Mary University of London, University College London, University of Cambridge, University of Glasgow, Heriot-Watt University, and Imperial College London. The project aims to deliver transformative advances in 3D nanoscale metamaterials, with applications relevant to integrated circuits, data centres, renewable energy systems, and the Internet of Things.

The successful candidate will develop theoretical models and high-performance computer codes for modelling the interaction between electromagnetic waves and dielectric and plasmonic nano-structures. Core work includes building numerical algorithms for nonlinear optical effects, validating models on test problems, and contributing to publications, conference presentations, and project reporting.

The position is offered for 19.5 months in the first instance, with the possibility that further funding may become available. The salary is Grade 7.31 (£45,103 per annum inclusive of London Allowance). If the successful applicant has not yet been awarded a PhD, appointment may be made as a Research Assistant (Grade 6B) until the PhD is completed.

Applicants should have a first degree in electrical engineering, physics, or applied mathematics, plus significant research experience in theoretical and computational electromagnetics. A PhD in a relevant subject is expected. Strong expertise in one or more computational electromagnetics methods is required, such as FDTD, finite-element methods, plane-wave expansion, multiple-scattering matrix, or boundary integral methods. Excellent communication skills are essential. Knowledge of quantum optics, nonlinear optics, and deep learning methods for computational electromagnetics is desirable.
